Drayage FAQ

Common Questions

What is drayage?

Drayage is a short truck movement that commonly connects a port or rail ramp with a warehouse, distribution center or another transportation point.

Do I need to provide a chassis?

Chassis arrangements vary by terminal, container and market. State what is already arranged and what you need Logistics Worldwide to review.

Can you handle overweight containers?

Share the verified cargo and gross weights. Equipment, permits and routing requirements must be reviewed before service is confirmed.

What is the difference between demurrage and detention?

In general, demurrage is a terminal storage charge for a container left at the terminal after free time ends. Detention, also called per diem, is a charge for keeping the carrier’s container or equipment past the allowed free days. Charges and free time vary by terminal and steamship line.

Why does the last free day matter?

The last free day is generally the final day a container can stay at the terminal before storage charges may apply. Sharing it early gives our team time to review pickup, pre-pull and delivery options.

What do you need for an export move?

Send the booking number, cargo cutoff, terminal, loading address and ready time, container size and type, and the cargo weight. Note anything that is still to be confirmed.

How quickly will I hear back?

We respond within one hour during business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST. Requests received after hours are answered the next business day.
